Collectible Design

SLOWING DOWN THE PRESENT | Pascal Smelik creates works of art that provoke a feeling of delay. An inner reaction to the fast-paced world we live in. Reflecting his desired state of mind of slowing down the present, a way he would love to live. By carefully experimenting with natural processes and forms he creates works of art that are literally ‘in the moment’.

His works, referred to as ‘collectible design’, have been featured and exhibited in galleries and leading art fairs around the world. Pascal Smelik mainly works with small series, limited editions and site or context specific commissions, Pascal Smelik (1983, NL) studied Product Design at the Utrecht School of the Arts. He graduated cum-laude in 2009. One year later he founded his studio in Amsterdam. Today he works from his studio in the green surroundings of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Smelik gets inspired by the macro- and micro cosmos. The micro cosmos shows him that we and life itself are mesmerising, how clever biology is creating this beautiful cycle of what we call life. The macro cosmos inspires Smelik to make daily life less overwhelming. This comfortable thought makes Smelik feel that the haste we fill our lives with is relative and it only exists within our minds.
